Hey my friend,
True story. Yesterday. Annual visit to my Primary Care Physician.
Me to my PCP: “Who do you recommend and refer your menopausal women to here for support?
My doctor is a woman herself in this age range.
Her actual response to me , “ I think there’s someone in Connecticut, but you must have some friends who know about this you can ask. I’m surprised you’re haven’t googled it already.”
Me: Dumbfounded.
She tells me hormonal support for women in menopause is still pretty unconventional and not something she treats.
I say I understand my PCP doesn’t treat this, but I’m surprised she doesn’t have a list of referrals at the ready considering how many women struggle with this-and how many of them see her as patients…I know these women.
Once again, she replied if it’s such a big deal for you maybe you should Google it.
WTF?
So I leave furious, disheartened, dismissed, frustrated yet empowered. I decided to take her advice…immediately.
I took to the Facebook. I shared what I just told you.
I added, “I know you all listen to the same podcasts I do and I’m 1000 hours deep into everything Mary Claire Haver and everyone else has said… plus I know you are all sweating and irritable, and all the things so who in Rhode Island is the recommended expert on this esoteric unconventional problem called menopause?
Who do you see who do you love and who believes you?
I’m gonna need a pulpit soon!
Within minutes the replies start coming. It’s an avalanche. Hundreds of comments flooded my feed.
Some sharing their experience, others their rage and many the resources I needed to take my health back into my own hands.
Hear Alicia Keys sing this: That thread was on fire!
I got exactly what I needed to now start moving out of this menopause swirl. Helpful, practical information, resources and the emotional compassionate understanding doctors were once known to provide.
The doc was a total bust, AND her unexpected …medically, extra-unprofessional… not to mention, ÜBER SHITTY… advice turned out to be…helpful.
“You must have some friends who know about this you can ask.”
You’re damn right I do and though I remain offended and gobsmacked to be left to lean on citizen science here and facebook to solve my medical challenges I was also reminded that one of my greatest resources in this lifetime is YOU!
Our family, friends, community, colleagues, and yes social media may in fact have something we need to re-orient us where we need to go, to get back on track, to help us take that next step…to get us there.
So ask. Ask the people in the trenches. Ask the people who are living it, have lived it. Ask until you have the answers that satisfy your curiosity or your suffering. Then be diligent and discerning with which wisdom to keep and what to leave.
Listen, maybe a hot flash can melt me from the inside. We don’t know.
I’ve got calls into a few places now and am moving the ball down the field. If you’re local and want a list of who and what was shared with me just drop a “yes please” here and I will send some resources over.
